Cheers and tears is one of Charbel Baini's books translated from Arabic by Elie shaanin

My bother Joseph Sarkis Baini

To the soul of my brother Joseph Sarkis Baini

-1-

Today, my wings were broken

And the winds Destroyed my heart

I tried to cry, but how can I cry

Drunk from the pain, not sober

Joseph, you were always drawing a smile

On a transparent face drowning in my pain

Lifelong companion. I listen when you speak

Your silence, my brother, broke my happy cups

And Veronica despairs and complains

And says all my joys are dead

A caring family, its presence is a blessing

Sadness has cast a shadow over it, O father of Dom

Your death, my brother, has opened my wounds

ـ2ـ

Oh, how a person goes away

Like a northern breeze

And what good are dreams when the soul

Leaves a body that been created by dust.

And Mejdlaya raised you on high roofs

From which you can reached the sun

It hasn't forgotten you...but her heart is wounded

Your death killed it a lot, my dear

You were a fragrant perfume bottle

Perfuming exile with the darkness of nights

And I will sit in my exile, lamenting

And drawing your imagination on paper intentionally

That's why it's hard for you to leave my mind

-3-

My father and mother and brothers preceded you

And today you have gathered together in heaven

And me, still blaming myself

Why I’m remain here, my brother

There you become many

Living forever in heavenly paradise

And I will live in a sinner world

hanging here alone

From above, keep your eyes on me

-4-

Two sons and two daughters cried for you

They lived all their love near you

And a son-in-law and two daughters-in-law in your eyes

They lived, my brother, and adorned your path

You raised their children, and with your own hands

You embraced them, after you embraced them with your heart

Look at all the loved ones gathered around you

I will tell you in my voice

On behalf all your family and friends

Joseph. O, Joseph, we love you
